Goal Setting: Segmented Approach

The key to setting attainable goals is the execution of those goals. You may be someone who starts great and plateau’s out over the duration of a season or course like me or you may be someone who coasts just to grind it out at the end. In any event goal setting starts and ends with your approach to those goals. I once watched a TED Talk video on YouTube where the speaker, Stephen Duneier talked about how he came to success and he claimed he practiced his ability to achieve goals by segmenting them into smaller more attainable subgoals that would align with the end goal. For example, someone who may want to lose weight fast may go the route of running a mile and doing 100 pushups every night but that may be hard to consistently do and that’s when burnout usually happens because it’s exhausting. For the more reasonable goal setter doing 10 pushups every single night to start with a jog to start their day may be a lot more achievable from a consistency standpoint. As the tasks get easier you switch up tactics or make the workout harder and the satisfaction of improvement will likely push you further along than you can imagine.

So remember, when setting goals understand the end goal then think about how you can break down your season or course into smaller parts to achieve that end goal. Don’t be afraid to start small but the key is to be diligent and execute those segmented goals at any cost. Regardless of the outcome you will grow and improve your self-discipline tenfold then it is just a matter of adjusting the goals accordingly based on those outcomes.

I have really been working to incorporate this mentality into my everyday life and it really helps me focus more consistently throughout the day. This was also another talking point in the video where Mr. Duneier talks about, “becoming an active participant in all of your decisions” throughout your day. I mean think about how many times we really set out and aimlessly march throughout the day, some days just feel like a drag but if we can fight that mentality off just by saying, “Okay, I am aware and I am attentive.” I think we would all be a lot better off.

In Short, if you are really struggling with developing consistency or even some self-discipline start small and be diligent in your efforts. As they say, “Rome was not built in one Day.” You can do anything you set your mind too, I want to be proof in the pudding to that testament and I am working everyday to be better than I was yesterday. I fall short everyday but I am thankful for the chance to do better tomorrow. If you take pride in that and your work, YOU CANNOT LOSE.

Goal Setting Formula:

  1. ID End Goal – What do you want to say you accomplished when it’s all over? Personally and as a Team.
  2. Define non-negotiables for yourself to keep aligned with those goals.
  3. Segment End Goal into smaller more achievable goals (Execution is key!)
  4. Understand the sacrifice for those goals.
  5. Stay Consistent!
  6. Become an active participant in all of your daily decisions.
